Sending a text might seem like a quick, easy task with no ramifications to your health, but our physicians believe that texting can actually negatively affect your spine. The average head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds. According to a recent study by Dr. Ken Hansraj, a New York back surgeon, tilting your head down to check Facebook, texts and email can add gravitational pull to the head. Dr. Hansraj found the following facts from his study:
- If your head is bent at 15 degrees, the head weighs approximately 27 pounds.
- If your head is bent at 30 degrees, the head weighs approximately 40 pounds.
- If your head is bent at 45 degrees, the head weighs approximately 49 pounds.
- If your head is bent at 60 degrees, the head weighs approximately 60 pounds.
The weight and pressure on the spine increases significantly when flexing the head forward, therefore increasing the odds of spinal injuries and back injuries.
Tips on Avoiding Spinal Injuries from Texting
Since technology is such an integral part of daily life, it’s important to know how to combat potential spine and neck pain from texting and smartphone usage.
- Your eyes have a range of motion, so it’s not necessary for you to tilt your head while using your phone. Try to send a text without tilting your head until it becomes comfortable.
- If you do tilt your head, move your head back and forth several times to keep your neck limber.
- Put your hands on your head and push your head forward. The resistance will strengthen the muscles and ligaments to reduce your odds of getting neck and spine pain.
